Mary Magdalene was born 1 A.D and  grew up in a town Magdala, Judea. Mary Magdalene grew up practicing the religion of Judaism. During Mary Magdalene’s lifetime, a lot of women were given the name “Mary.” Her last name, Magdalene, came from the her home town which was also called Magdala. She is known to have a Jewish background, although some people see her actions as a Gentile, or non-Jewish person.  Mary Magdalene had a mistaken identity for 20 years.  Stories of Mary Magdalene can be found in the New Testament of the Bible.

Mary Magdalene is the patron saint of multiple things, and there is a cause for each one. During her life, Mary worked as a hairdresser for the women of her town so she is the patron saint of hairdressers. She is also known as the patron saint of frail and penitent women because of what she did to get forgiveness.

Before Mary Magdalene became a follower of Christ, she was known as a sinner.  She went to Jesus in all of her beauty and anointed his feet with expensive perfumes. After Jesus forgives Mary Magdalene, she is known in the Bible as one of Jesus’ most loyal followers.  According to the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, she was a witness of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.  She is now honored as one of the first witnesses as a disciple of Jesus Christ to see his resurrection.

Mary Magdalene is known to have retired to a hill for thirty years. She is famous for weeping at Christ’s feet which is what made her a saint of the Catholic Church.  She became known as one of his most devoted disciples and a woman who talked about what Jesus stood for. During the suffering that Jesus went through, she was there with the other disciples to witness it all.

Mary Magdalene is an example of how a faithful person should act.  Her feast day is July 22nd.
