THE POWER OF DANCE

Twice a week, on Mondays and Tuesdays, after school, I would come home, settle in, and then get ready to go to dance classes. Although lazy summer days have now turned into busy school year schedules, I look forward to these days. It’s the beginning of a new dance year and I’m excited to learn our new dances and be with my dance team.

There are various after school activities that kids today participate in. In today’s technology-driven world, dancing, like any other sports, is a means of adopting an active and healthy lifestyle.

But what sets dance apart? Dance is a wonderful activity. It is not just a sequence of movements. It is an art that uses movements as a means of communicating and a powerful medium to express one’s feelings and thoughts.

I recently had the opportunity to interview my dance teacher, Miss Lisa Hamel. She has been teaching for a couple years now and has been my dance teacher since I was 6 years old.  “Dance helps kids stay active, healthy, and physically fit. It teaches them to love their bodies and the skin that they’re in. Beyond that, it teaches self-confidence, discipline, respect, good sportsmanship, and builds lifelong friendships. The benefits of dance last a lifetime”.

Dancing is not just about steps and music. It is a perfect combination of physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation. It is a means of developing skills and self expression. It improves focus, discipline and confidence. Dance encourages socialization. It is a great place to make friends, communicate, and work as a team. It helps build lasting memories and friendships.  Most of all it is relaxing and fun. So go ahead, just dance!
